He won the election with 49.42% of the vote, defeating his main rival, Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party.

On Wednesday, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega sent his congratulations to Lee Jae-myung on his election as president of South Korea.

“On behalf of the People and Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of the Republic of Nicaragua, we wish to express our sincere congratulations for the victory achieved during the presidential elections, held last June 3,” Ortega said.

“We take this opportunity to continue strengthening the traditional bonds of friendship, cooperation and mutual respect existing between our peoples and governments, and our aspiration for a more just and equitable world, in peace, wellbeing and development.”

“From our Nicaragua, blessed and always free, please receive our fraternal embrace and the affection of all Nicaraguans for the brotherly people of the Republic of Korea,” Ortega stated.

Similarly, Honduran President Xiomara Castro also congratulated Lee on his electoral victory and reaffirmed her government’s commitment to strengthening the ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

“On behalf of the people and government of Honduras, we congratulate His Excellency Lee Jae-myung on his recent victory in the South Korean presidential elections,” Castro said in a message posted on her X account.

Lee won Tuesday’s presidential election with 49.42% of the vote, defeating his main rival, Kim Moon-soo of the conservative People Power Party, who garnered 41.15%.

The new South Korean president assumed office immediately after the electoral authority confirmed the results, skipping the usual transition period.

The exceptional measure was taken because the election was moved up following the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk-yeol, who had attempted to impose martial law in late 2024.
